After the March 1938 annexation of Austria, this organizational framework was extended to the former Austrian regions. The organizational hierarchy of the Hitler Youth was based on a military model: the smallest element was the Kameradschaft (comradeship), consisting of approximately 15 boys. Multiple Kameradschaften comprised a Schar (troop), and several Scharen formed a Gefolgschaft (unit) containing roughly 150 to 200 boys. Several Gefolgschaften constituted an Unterbann (sub-district), while multiple Unterbanne combined to form a Bann (district) with an estimated 3,000 to 5,000 members.
