Original Bush War Rhodesian Air Force MK1A Helmet with G-Type Flying Cap and H-Type Oxygen Mask.
The MK1A Flying Helmet replaced the earlier and short lived MK1 'Bonedome' which came out during the 1950s as part of the 'Fast Jet Pilot System'. The helmet has its original blue paint finish often seen on Rhodesian Pilots’ during the Bush War as well as other Aircrew in different Aviation settings such as the Alouette crewman in the last photo (note the same deep blue). This helmet was worn in with the types F and G inner helmet flying caps, which housed the avionics and could accommodate an oxygen mask. The MK1A is a basic protective helmet made of leather-lined fiberglass. It features a simple nylon webbing suspension system inside to provide a comfortable fit over the inner flying cap. The helmet also comes with an anti-glare visor that has a center rail attachment and mechanism, as well as a replaceable tinted acrylic anti-glare screen. The helmet is a size 2 Regular featuring a 70214 Serial Number. The G-Type flying cap is a size 3 and dated 1957. The H-Type Oxygen mask is a size medium. The MK1A Helmet and Oxygen Mask are both named inside “Batstone”.
