The 1st Special Forces Group (SFG) played a significant role in the early stages of the Vietnam War and throughout the conflict. The 1st SFG was activated on Okinawa in 1957 and immediately formed mobile training teams (MTTs) to teach unconventional warfare tactics to armed forces in the Pacific Rim, including South Vietnam. They were involved in conducting Ranger courses for the South Vietnamese army as early as 1957. They were crucial in the establishment of the CIDG program, which trained and organized tribal groups (like the Montagnards) to combat the Viet Cong and protect their villages. 1st SFG sent teams to Vietnam for six-month temporary duty assignments, participating in combat and non-combat missions, including civic action projects like building schools and providing medical care. First Group also holds the distinction of having the first and last Special Forces soldiers killed in Vietnam.
