The NRR, or Northern Rhodesia Regiment, was established in 1933 as a British Colonial Auxiliary Forces unit from the protectorate of Northern Rhodesia. Initially formed from the Northern Rhodesia Police under Company rule in 1912, the regiment consisted of both black soldiers and white officers. Their emblematic motto was "Different in Race, Equal in Fidelity", possibly inspired by the recognition and compensation given to native African porters who acted as couriers during the First World War by the British.
During the Second World War, the NRR was involved in multiple campaigns, such as Somaliland, Madagascar, the Middle East, Ceylon, and Burma. The 1st Battalion had their final campaign in the Kabaw Valley offensive, serving in the 11th East African Division in late 1944. They later returned to Africa in January 1946.
The 1st Battalion played a significant role in the Malayan Emergency from 1953 to 1955. From 1953 to 1963, while Southern Rhodesia and Nyasaland were federated, it was part of the Federal armed forces. After Northern Rhodesia became Zambia in 1964, the NRR was renamed the Zambia Regiment and became a part of the new Zambian Defence Force.
