The flag of the DPRK or Democratic People’s Republic of North Korea, also known as the Ramhongsaek Konghwagukgi (Korean: 람홍색공화국기; literally "blue and red-colored flag of the republic"), consists of a central red panel, bordered both above and below by a narrow white stripe and a broad blue stripe. The central red panel bears a five-pointed red star within a white circle near the hoist.
In the 1950s, with assistance from the Soviets, the PLA began to transition from a peasant army to a more modern one. Since 1949, China has implemented nine different military strategies, known as "strategic guidelines" within the PLA. The most significant ones were introduced in 1956, 1980, and 1993. These changes also resulted in the creation of thirteen military regions in 1955.
In November 1950, Chinese forces, known as the People's Volunteer Army, intervened in the Korean War as UN forces, led by General Douglas MacArthur, approached the Yalu River. Despite initially driving MacArthur's forces out of North Korea and capturing Seoul, the Chinese were eventually forced to retreat south of Pyongyang, north of the 38th Parallel. The war also prompted the swift modernization of the PLAAF.
