During World War II, the Desert Air Force (DAF), also known by names such as Air Headquarters Western Desert and the First Tactical Air Force (1TAF), was formed under RAF Middle East Command in North Africa to offer close air support to the British Eighth Army against Axis forces. This Allied tactical air force, which originated from No. 204 Group RAF, consisted of squadrons from various air forces, including the Royal Air Force, the South African Air Force, the Royal Australian Air Force, and the United States Army Air Forces.
