The National Socialist German Workers' Party (NSDAP), also known as the Nazi Party, was a far-right political party that operated in Germany from 1920 to 1945. The party promoted National Socialism as its core ideology and emerged from the Freikorps paramilitary culture, which opposed communist uprisings in post-WWI Germany. At first, the party criticized big business and capitalism, but later toned down these beliefs to gain support from the business community. By the 1930s, the Nazi Party heavily emphasized anti-Semitic and anti-Marxist principles. In 1933, Adolf Hitler, who had led the party since 1921, was appointed Chancellor by President Paul von Hindenburg. Under Hitler's leadership, a totalitarian regime known as the Third Reich was quickly established. Following the death of President Hindenburg on August 2, 1934, Hitler combined the positions of party leader, head of state, and head of government into one, assuming the title of Führer und Reichskanzler. The NSDAP remained in power throughout the duration of the war.
