The Voluntary Militia for National Security (Milizia Volontaria per la Sicurezza Nazionale, MVSN) colloquially known as the Blackshirts (Camicie Nere, CCNN), or squadristi, was the paramilitary wing of the National Fascist Party. It later became an all-volunteer militia of the Kingdom of Italy under Fascist rule and was similar to the SA. Members wore distinctive black uniforms, inspired by the elite troops of World War I known as the Arditi, and were fiercely loyal to Benito Mussolini, the Duce of Fascism, to whom they pledged their allegiance. Nationalist intellectuals, former army officers, and young landowners who opposed peasants' and country laborers' unions founded the paramilitary groups. As Mussolini's power increased, their tactics became more severe, resorting to violence and intimidation against his opponents. After the Fascist regime fell in 1943, the MVSN was merged into the Royal Italian Army and dissolved.
