In 1989, South Africa was involved in Namibia as part of the United Nations Transition Assistance Group (UNTAG), which was tasked with overseeing Namibia's transition to independence. The UNTAG mission included a military component that worked alongside South African forces and monitored the ceasefire, as well as a police component that supported the local South West Africa Police (SWAPOL). The South African Military Police were present under the SADF.
