Founded in 1962, FRELIMO (Frente de Libertação de Moçambique, Mozambique Liberation Front) is a democratic socialist political party in Mozambique. Initially, it emerged as a nationalist movement, fighting for Mozambique’s self-determination and independence from Portuguese colonial rule. During its anti-colonial struggle, FRELIMO cultivated friendly relations with both the Soviet Union and China, receiving military and economic assistance from both. Independence was achieved in June 1975 following the Carnation Revolution in Lisbon the previous year.

In February 1977, FRELIMO formally became a political party, adopting Marxism–Leninism as its official ideology and FRELIMO Party (Partido FRELIMO) as its official name.

Since then, FRELIMO has been the ruling party of Mozambique. Initially, it held the sole legal status in a one-party system, later becoming the democratically elected government in a dominant-party system. From 1976 to 1992, FRELIMO engaged in a protracted civil war against the anti-communist Mozambican National Resistance (RENAMO). RENAMO received support from the white minority governments of Rhodesia and South Africa. In 1990, FRELIMO approved a new national constitution, which abolished one-party rule and established a multi-party system. Since then, FRELIMO has emerged as the dominant party in Mozambique, securing a majority of the seats in the Assembly of the Republic in every election since the country’s first multi-party election in 1994.

This set also features threading for where jump wings were once stitched to the wearer’s left sleeve, a very unique feature, noting this set was possibly re-issued within RENAMO, Rhodesian, or South African Forces and saw continued use. The jacket and pants both feature matched wear and staining in certain areas, minimally so. Only a couple of buttons and press snaps are missing between the two.
