Zimbabwe Rhodesia was a short-lived sovereign state that existed from June 1, 1979 to April 18, 1980, despite not receiving international recognition. Its predecessor, the Republic of Rhodesia, was briefly under a British-supervised transitional government before being re-established as Southern Rhodesia. According to British constitutional theory, Southern Rhodesia remained the lawful government in the area after its Unilateral Declaration of Independence in 1965. After approximately three months, the colony was granted independence as the internationally-recognized Republic of Zimbabwe within the Commonwealth.
