The Carlisle Model First Aid Packet was developed at the Carlisle Barracks Military Reservation in Pennsylvania in the early 1920s. It was a standard-issue item for American soldiers, intended for immediate treatment of wounds and to control bleeding on the battlefield. Initially, these packets were packaged in sealed metal tins, but beginning in 1943, they were issued in waxed cardboard boxes or waterproof wrappers for economy. The packaging was designed to keep the dressing sterile and protected from the elements. Soldiers carried these packets in their first-aid pouches or uniform pockets for quick access during combat. The instructions on the packet, "RED COLOR INDICATES BACK OF DRESSING PUT OTHER SIDE NEXT TO WOUND," guided soldiers on proper application. These specific models are manufactured by "ACME COTTON PROD. CO., INC., N. Y. C." other manufacturers, such as Bauer & Black, also produced packets under government contract.
