Original 1959 Pre Vietnam War US Marine Corps A Company 3rd Recon Battalion 3rd Marine Divison Named Japanese “Torii” Desk Award.

Very unique piece of Marine Corps History! This hand-painted “Torii” was awarded to Machine Gunner Leo M Corrigan for service from August 1958 to October 1959. A Torii (Japanese: 鳥居) is a traditional Japanese gate most commonly found at the entrance of or within a Shinto shrine, where it symbolically marks the transition from the mundane to the sacred and a spot where kami are welcomed and thought to travel through. The piece measures approximately 10” tall and 8” wide at the base.

Plenty of further research to be done on this piece!
