A great example of the classic US Navy squadron cap. This cap was made around the mid-1960s by Harvard Sports Headwear, and unlike many caps of the era which are Japanese, it was made in the USA. Really incredibly well made cap that feels really substantial. This one was made for a crewman serving with VQ-2, a US Navy reconnaissance squadron that flew a variety of aircraft and would fly during the Cuban Missile Crisis as well as Vietnam. All the insignia and the Batmen patch to the reverse are original.
Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron VQ-2, also known as “Batmen” and later “Sandeman,” was an air reconnaissance squadron of the United States Navy, established on 1 September 1955 and based at NAS Whidbey Island, previously at NAVSTA Rota, Spain, flying both Douglas EA-3B Skywarrior and Lockheed EP-3E Aries aircraft until 1991 and then strictly EP-3E aircraft until 2012. The squadron was disestablished on 22 May 2012.
Really solid shape and looks hardly worn. There are a few tiny moth nips to the wool, but a very beautiful and wearable piece.
