Established in 1961 at Brady Barracks (Bulawayo, Southern Rhodesia), The Rhodesian Light Infantry (RLI) or 1st Battalion, Rhodesian Light Infantry (1RLI) was a renowned regiment known for its light infantry tactics and dedication to the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland. In 1964, the regiment became part of the Southern Rhodesian Army and transformed into a commando battalion, continuing to uphold its honor and expertise from its headquarters at Cranborne Barracks (Salisbury). Following Rhodesia's Unilateral Declaration of Independence on November 11th, 1965, the RLI played a significant role as a counter-insurgency unit during the Rhodesian Bush War. The conflict saw the government's security forces combat the guerrilla efforts of two opposing factions, the Zimbabwe African National Liberation Army (ZANLA) and the Zimbabwe People's Revolutionary Army (ZIPRA). The RLI, an all-white regiment, was primarily composed of professional soldiers until 1973. That year, competent conscripted national servicemen were introduced. Along with many foreign volunteers, who were often veterans of other conflicts, these individuals played a significant role in the Regiment. The RLI earned nicknames such as "The Saints" or "The Incredibles." The RLI was known for its extensive use of airborne tactics, leading to its designation as a parachute regiment in 1976. In 1979, the unit served under the government of Zimbabwe Rhodesia, before being disbanded in 1980 under the interim British government. Following a brief period of service under the new government of Zimbabwe, the RLI was officially disbanded in October of that year. The success of the RLI's counter-insurgency operations can be attributed to their tactics and training, leading to unparalleled tactical superiority according to United States Army Lieutenant-Colonel Dave Grossman. Alexandre Binda highlights the RLI as a top anti-terrorist force and Major Charles D. Melson, chief historian of the United States Marine Corps, praises their effectiveness as "The Killing Machine."
