As the only standing armoured battalion of the Rhodesian Security Forces, they were nicknamed the "Black Devils" and were renowned for their participation in major campaigns and battles, such as the Allied Spring offensive and the Battle of Monte Cassino in World War II. Under the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, the unit was known as the "Selous Scouts" and their crews received training in the United Kingdom or Aden Colony. With Rhodesia's Unilateral Declaration of Independence, the responsibility of maintaining the armoured vehicle fleet fell to the Rhodesian Light Infantry, until the former Rhodesian Armoured Car Regiment was reactivated in 1972 by Major Bruce Rooken-Smith. During the Rhodesian Bush War, the regiment continued to play a crucial role in battles and campaigns, including Operation Miracle in September 1979. However, it was eventually replaced by the new Zimbabwe Army.
